A good EPOS system does more than take payment. Use this checklist before you choose one.

What to look for in an EPOS system: a UK buyer's checklist

It is easy to compare tills on screen size and price. The better question is what the system does for the whole business once it is running.

Payments

Check how payments connect to the till, how quickly funds arrive and what happens if the connection drops. Payment setup depends on your provider, hardware and agreed scope.

Stock

Can you see stock levels, set reorder points and track waste from the same system you sell on?

Reporting

You should be able to see sales by product, site, shift and staff member without exporting spreadsheets.

Hardware

Check whether the system runs on the devices you need: counter, tablet, handheld, kiosk and kitchen display. Browse the options on our hardware page.

Offline and reliability

Service does not stop when the internet does. Ask how the system behaves offline.

Integrations

Think about accounting, ecommerce and online ordering. Integration is subject to technical access and agreed scope.

Support and set-up

Ask who installs it, who trains your team and who you call when it matters.

Room to grow

The right system should handle a second site, a new product line or a delivery route without starting again.
