Handheld POS for food trucks: what to look for

October 7, 2026

Food trucks need a device that survives a long shift, works on mobile data and keeps the queue moving. Here is the checklist.

Handheld POS for food trucks: what to look for

A food truck has no wired network, limited counter space and a queue that will not wait. The right handheld POS has to cope with all three.

Connectivity first

Look for a device with 4G LTE as well as Wi-Fi. Pitches and events rarely have reliable Wi-Fi, so mobile data keeps orders and payments flowing. The Lark 1 handheld includes 4G LTE and NFC.

Battery for the whole shift

A handheld that dies at the lunch rush costs more than any saving on the device. Check the battery capacity and plan for charging. The Lark 1 has a 5,000mAh battery, and single-slot and multi-slot chargers are available if you run several devices.

A built-in scanner helps more than you think

If you sell packaged items or check stock on loading, a built-in barcode scanner saves a second device. It comes as standard on the Lark 1.

Make it easy to hold

A trigger handle, hand strap and protective case make a handheld faster and safer to use in a busy, damp environment.

Payments

NFC models can accept contactless payments, subject to provider and hardware approval. Payment setup depends on your provider and agreed scope.
