Five stock control habits that cut waste in a food business

October 7, 2026

Waste usually comes from small gaps in how stock is counted, ordered and used. Five habits that close them.

Five stock control habits that cut waste in a food business

Most waste is not dramatic. It is a tray of something ordered twice, a delivery that was never checked, or a product nobody counted until it was out of date. These five habits close the common gaps.

1. Count the same things on the same day

A short, regular count of your fastest-moving and most expensive items tells you more than an occasional full stocktake. Pick the days, pick the list, and stick to it.

2. Set a par level for every key item

A par level is the amount you want on the shelf after a delivery. When stock drops below it, you order. It stops over-ordering and removes guesswork from busy weeks.

3. Check deliveries against the order

Check quantities and dates when the goods arrive, not later. Short or damaged items are much easier to resolve on the day.

4. Log waste as it happens

Spoilage, spills and staff meals all disappear from the shelf. If you record them, you can see which products are wasting money and why.

5. Compare what you sold with what you used

When sales and stock movement are in the same system, gaps show up quickly. That is where connected EPOS and stock control earns its place.
